Common Peroneal Nerve Entrapment and Foot Drop

A vulnerable nerve wraps right around a bony point just below your knee, and it doesn't take much sustained pressure to cause numbness, tingling, or even a foot that won't lift properly.
An Exposed Nerve Near the Knee
The common peroneal nerve winds around the head of the fibula, making it one of the most exposed sites of nerve compression below the knee., the smaller bone just below and to the outside of the knee, in a spot with very little soft tissue protection. That exposed position makes it one of the more vulnerable nerves in the body to direct compression, even everyday habits like sitting cross-legged for extended periods can put meaningful pressure on it.
How It Presents
Numbness or tingling over the top of the foot and outer shin is a common early sign, but the more distinctive feature of common peroneal nerve entrapment is weakness lifting the foot and toes, known as foot drop, which can be alarming. In noticeable cases, people describe their foot slapping down when walking, or catching their toes on uneven ground.
Symptoms can range from mild and intermittent to persistent, depending on how significant and how prolonged the compression has been.
What Tends to Cause It
Habitual leg crossing, prolonged squatting, and tight boots can all compress this nerve. Higher up the sciatic chain, piriformis syndrome can produce overlapping lower limb nerve symptoms., tight boots or casts pressing across the area, significant recent weight loss (which reduces the natural cushioning around the fibular head), and direct trauma to the outer knee are all recognised contributors. Prolonged bed rest with the legs positioned a certain way can also place sustained pressure on the nerve in this location.
Why Early Assessment Matters
Because this nerve controls a functionally important movement, lifting the foot clear of the ground while walking, ongoing compression that isn't addressed can affect gait and increase the risk of trips and falls. The earlier the compression is identified and the contributing pressure is removed, the better the general outlook tends to be for nerve recovery.
What Helps
Identifying and removing the source of direct pressure is the first and most important step, whether that's a postural habit, footwear, or another external cause. From there, treatment focuses on restoring nerve mobility and, where weakness has developed, a structured strengthening program for the affected muscles. Persistent foot drop or numbness is worth a prompt, proper assessment rather than a wait-and-see approach.
